Experimental Study on the Mucus Retention Cysts in the Rat Salivary Glands caused by the Surgical Injury

Abstract
In the past, mucus retention cysts (mucus retention phenomena, mucoceles) were thought to arise from obstruction of an excretory duct causing a back pressure of mucus and the formation of an epithelial lined cyst. It is now, however, generally accepted that the lesion is the result of trauma with injury or severance of an excretory duct and the subsequent leakage of mucus into the adjacent connective tissue.
Author attempted to produce mucus retention cysts experimentally in rats by severance or pinching of the excretory duct of the submaxillary glands. The animals were scrcutinized at the intervals of from 1 to 14 days postoperatively, devided with 6 groups i. e. 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 14 days respectively. The glands were exposed, examined grossly, removed and then they were treated by the routine microsection preparation and stained with Hematoxilin-Eosin.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. In the 17 of 24 experimented animals, lesions, similar to human mucus retention cysts were reproduced.
2. Most of the mucus retention cysts obtained were surrounded by connective or granulation tissue with the exception of one case where cyst cavity was partially lined with epithelium.
3. In early stages, mucus retention cysts showed an ill-defined accumulation of mucus in the connective tissue, but as the salivary secretion continued well-defined cystic cavities developed.
